. . . History of Herron Point Campgrounds . . .
This place stands as a beautiful campground today and has done so for many years according to locals..... although many locals from Mandurah/Perth & Bussleton/Bunbury claim that they have never known the place existed!
So of course Herron Point comes complete with a whole lot of history behind it.... originally used as a major cattle crossing over to Islander Point back in the day, it was used frequently by local farmers moving cattle from one side of the Harvey Estuary to the other, right where the boat ramp stands today.

Although you see a beautiful little bush camp today; it was once a community of approx 300 people living in lean-to's and shelters that were run down, falling apart and ridden with rubbish. This place was so-named 'Poverty Point'.
I found an article that talks about this particular part of town back in 1953..... check it out below. Click on this link HERE to view a newspaper clipping about Poverty Point; published in the Sunday Times Perth WA, on Sunday the 29th March 1953. A very interesting read about Herron Point back in the day. |
. . . The Campground . . .
As you can see the campground is a beautiful bush setting, along the shores of the Harvey Estuary. Simple but perfect for that camping getaway, a great place to relax, as the Estuary is shallow 1/3 of the way accross to the other side....... A safe place for children and dogs to swim and play.
Complete with flushing toilets run by the windmill through an underground bore.

. . . Living at Herron Point Campgrounds for 9mths . . .
We actually stopped in at this campground as it was recommended by fellow travellers as a nice spot to stop in for a couple of nights.
We ran the speel, asked the questions..... "How long you been here - when you leaving?" type scenario.
Well it just so happened that this couple of caretakers were moving on.....
and so we took over from March - December 2015 as the new Caretakers of Herron Point Campground WA.
We set ourselves up, built a fence for our new puppy, and began our journey as the caretakers.

. . . Bush Kitchen . . .
We decided to give the campground a little make-over... the place was craving a bit of love and we had the time.
We thought 'what can we contribute to this beautiful place?' A place that already has everything you could need for a bushcamp.
We decided that a hidden bore water tap could be turned into a kitchen sink, and the middle gazebo would be the new bush kitchen..... and so Matt set off to work. A huge thankyou to our friend Jack for the Jahra railing and for installing it.

Damper nights @ the bush kitchen were a regular Friday night event during fire season. Rain or shine; damper night went on. Sometimes we were graced with an appearance from Bruce the local bush poet and our friendly magician Danny.
Matt also built a fire pit for every campsite, and spread trailer loads of mulch to support the gardens. Thanks to the Murray Shire for supplying all the mulch.
. . . Murals & Artwork . . .
And then there's Leigh's artwork in the toilet block.... a splash of colour that makes your morning poo a little brighter!
Check out these before and after shots.....

. . . Sunsets @ Herron Point . . .
The sunsets at Herron Point are truly remarkable - some of the best we've seen on our travels. Western Australia certainly put on a majestic display of sensational colours during an afternoon of good cloud cover and the right weather.
And so we leave the campground and our new found camping friends; off on the next stage of our travelling adventure.
