Kununurra
Set on the outskirts of The Kimberleys, Kununurra is the first town you will come across when you travel west from NT; over the border into WA.
When you pass through Quarantine at the border line, you will have to surrender all of your honey, nuts, seeds, fruit and veges... however if you peel your veges, they can be taken over the border. |
Your first stop in Kununurra should be at Kimberley Beez... it is the place to restock on your confiscated honey. They use natural plants native to the area; to flavour their honey - which I might add, are very, very yummy! They are situated at 6 Carpentaria Street, Kununurra.
We had to stay in Kununurra for a week, as we were waiting for car parts to be delivered and then have our car fixed. We plonked ourselves in a groovy little caravan park called Hidden Valley, located on Weaber Plain road. We were set amongst Boab trees, Spectacular rocky escarpments and happy locals & backpackers. We paid $36/night for unpowered, hot showers, flushing toilets & swimming pool. A nearby backpacker was a bongo drum fan - big time....so we were lucky to be able to feel the cool vibes of rhythmic bongo drums morning and night, it was so soothing - I think I want to buy some Bongo Drums!
There are Boab trees everywhere up here in north-Western Australia. They are truly amazing - especially for me; as this was one off my bucket list. The Boab trees are each so individually unique... but also the same; in respect to the variety of uses that this tree offers....
* The baby leaves can be used in a salad
* The seed pods can be broken open, and the chalky insides can be eaten. You grind up this chalky substance with the seed - and a little powdered milk and honey. We tried some ground up - with no milk or honey (as we didn't have any at the time), and it tasted nice - like malt from a vanilla malted milkshake!
* The boab seed pods are also a magnificent canvas for painting onto
* The roots are also edible and contain 40 times the vitamin C content found in a single orange.

Kununurra has seasonal markets that run from April through to September. We were lucky enough to catch the 2nd last market held for this year, so we took advantage of this opportunity and held a stall there last Saturday.
We met a colourful character at the markets called "Wanderin' Wally" - he sells beautiful zebra rocks (zebra rocks are only found in north-western Australia) with cleverly drawn boab trees on them, as a silhouette. He thought our boys were very well mannered and polite, and held an interesting conversation; so he created a boab picture on a rock for them as a gift. Thanks Wanderin' Wally, great keepsake for the boys!

We went for a drive out to Ivanhoe Crossing. You can't get across to the other side, but it is truly magnificent to see up close. The gushing water creates an ambience in the air that seems to ignite your senses, no swimming though - chances are if you don't get washed down the river, you will probably be eaten by a humungous man-eating croc! . . . No thank you!
