Julia Creek . . .
Julia Creek is a free camp alongside a narrow but long waterway. You can camp either side of the creek right on the water's edge. Bins and delicious fresh drinking water is available; but no toilets or showers. A camp host is located as you drive in; you must book in before setting up and you must be self-contained. There are a few redclaw about; and if you are keen, you can take a dip to cool off. The flies are abundant; head nets are available at the information centre in town which is only a 5 min drive or 15 min bicycle ride.....5 groovy, modern bicycles and helmets are available to use for free - ask at the camp host.
A must see place to visit is the Julia Creek information centre... here you will find the cutest little rodent - the Dunnart. A tiny little marsupial that resides in this area. The resident Dunnart at the information centre is 3 years old; and if you happen to visit at 10am or 3pm, you will be lucky enough to witness feeding time. The information centre boasts more than your regular finds; scouting around the buildings you will find doorways into the lives and history of this remarkable town. Learn about country living, hurdles and triumphs the locals have faced over the years such as several plagues, drought and unwanted weeds..... plus the well known truth about how Burke and Wills did not stop through this town! We found this little town abundant with interesting history, facts and friendly faces - well worth the visit.
